You had surgery. The procedure went well. But weeks later, something feels wrong. There are areas that are hard to the touch. Uneven. Lumpy. The smooth result you expected has not fully materialized and you're not sure why.
What you are most likely experiencing is post-surgical fibrosis one of the most common complications after liposuction, BBL, and body contouring procedures. The good news: it is treatable.
What Is Fibrosis After Liposuction?
Fibrosis is the formation of excess fibrous connective tissue as part of the body's healing response to surgical trauma. During liposuction and similar procedures, the cannula disrupts fat cells and surrounding tissue. As the body repairs this damage, it produces collagen the structural protein that forms scar tissue.
When this collagen production is excessive or disorganized particularly when post-operative lymphatic drainage is delayed or skipped the result is fibrotic tissue: dense, rigid bands beneath the skin's surface that create the hardness, lumps, and uneven texture many patients experience after surgery.
Fibrosis is not a sign that something went wrong with your surgery. It is a natural healing response one that can be addressed with the right treatment approach.
Signs You May Have Post-Lipo Fibrosis
The most common signs of fibrosis after liposuction include: hard or firm areas in treated zones, lumps or bumps that feel different from surrounding tissue, rippling or uneven surface texture on the skin, tightness or restricted sensation in the affected area, and swelling that has persisted beyond the expected healing timeline.
Fibrosis can develop as early as two to three weeks post-surgery and become more established over the following months. Early treatment produces significantly better outcomes than waiting.
How Is Fibrosis Treated After Liposuction?
At Luxara Body Studio in Irvine, we use a multi-modality protocol tailored to the age, location, and severity of your fibrosis. There is no single technique that addresses all cases effective fibrosis treatment requires a strategic combination of approaches.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): The foundation of every fibrosis protocol at Luxara. Gentle, targeted MLD reduces the inflammation surrounding fibrotic tissue, improving circulation and initiating the softening process. MLD also prevents new fibrotic tissue from forming in areas that are still in the acute healing phase.
Radiofrequency (RF) Therapy: RF energy penetrates into the dermal layers, generating controlled heat that triggers collagen remodeling. Over a series of sessions, this promotes the reorganization of disorganized fibrotic collagen into more structured, pliable tissue. Clients typically notice visible smoothing and softening within 4 to 6 sessions.
Ultrasound Cavitation: For more established fibrosis and adhesions, low-frequency ultrasound helps disrupt fibrotic bands and encourages the body to reabsorb and eliminate them through the lymphatic system. When combined with MLD in the same session, the effect is amplified significantly.
How Many Sessions Does Fibrosis Treatment Take?
Results depend on how long ago your surgery was and how established the fibrosis is. For clients beginning treatment within the first two to three months post-surgery, meaningful softening typically begins within 4 to 6 sessions. Significant improvement in texture and contour usually develops over 8 to 12 sessions.
For more established fibrosis when clients come to us six months or more after their procedure results take longer but are still achievable with consistent treatment. We have worked with clients addressing fibrosis years after surgery with significant success.
Can Fibrosis Be Prevented?
Yes and this is one of the most important arguments for beginning post-op lymphatic drainage immediately after surgery. Clients who start MLD within the first 48 to 72 hours after liposuction experience dramatically lower rates of fibrosis formation than those who delay. The inflammatory environment that creates fibrosis is most effectively managed in that early window.
